Why choose UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals for pediatric neurorecovery care?

After a brain injury, your child may need support that extends beyond the initial exam, diagnosis or hospital stay. At UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, your child receives dedicated pediatric neurorecovery care during this important stage.

Our experts evaluate school-age children and teens after concussion, traumatic brain injury (TBI), stroke and other acquired brain injuries. We consider your child's symptoms, medical history, health needs and daily functioning to plan the most effective care.

Your family receives guidance for recovery, school support, therapy referrals and follow-up care. When helpful, we also connect you with UCSF specialists and resources closer to home.

What is pediatric neurorecovery?

Neurorecovery focuses on how your child's brain heals and adapts after an injury, tracking their progress over time.

No single treatment can undo a traumatic brain injury. But the right supports can help reduce symptoms and make daily life easier. We help your family understand how recovery progresses and the next steps that can help your child feel their best.

Care shaped around your child's needs

During your child's visit, we ask about the symptoms they've noticed since the injury. We also review your child's health, strengths, challenges and goals.

Your child's needs may change throughout recovery. We help connect your family with the appropriate neurological care, so your child gets the treatment they need.

General neurology experts can help with concerns early after a concussion. Young athletes may also benefit from our Sports Concussion Program for return-to-sport guidance. If symptoms continue, neurorecovery experts can address longer-term concerns, including headaches, thinking changes and challenges with daily activities.

Your child's care plan may include ways to manage:

  • Activity

  • Cognitive pacing, which helps children balance activity and rest

  • Fatigue

  • Headaches

  • Sleep

When helpful, we connect your family with care options at UCSF or in your community. Your child may also benefit from:

Support for school, therapies and daily life

As your child heals, your family may face new questions at home or school. We help you sort through what comes next.

We can recommend return-to-learn strategies, classroom accommodations and medical documentation for school. When appropriate, we may also communicate with your child's school team.
