Understanding how your child’s body responds to exercise

The Pediatric Cardiopulmonary Exercise Lab at Mission Bay evaluates how your child’s heart, lungs and muscles work together during physical activity. Testing may help identify possible concerns with heart or lung function or blood circulation.

Your child may exercise on a treadmill or stationary bike in a kid-friendly facility while our team monitors their body's response. Our providers explain each step in an age-appropriate way, helping your child feel comfortable and ease fears about testing.

Test results can help your child’s providers understand exercise capacity and symptoms that occur during activity. Results may also guide diagnosis, treatment decisions and ongoing follow-up.

Our exercise testing services

The testing your child receives depends on their health needs and their provider’s referral. Our services include:

  • Cardiopulmonary exercise testing with expiratory gas analysis. Measures breathing, oxygen use and exercise capacity
  • Exercise and pharmacologic perfusion imaging. Evaluates blood flow during exercise or medication-induced stress
  • Exercise echocardiography. Uses ultrasound to show how the heart works during exercise
  • Exercise electrocardiography (EKG or ECG). Records the heart’s electrical activity during exercise
  • Exercise testing with central hemodynamic monitoring. Measures how the circulatory system responds as the body works harder
