Pediatric Trauma Center Education

The level I trauma center at UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland is a premier training center for pediatric trauma management.
Our trauma education program provides learning professionals with core knowledge, career development and supervised experience at all levels and across all disciplines. These include nurses, medical students, junior-level residents, senior-level fellows and attending physicians.
UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland (accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education) offers in-house training programs in pediatrics and emergency medicine. Every year, more than 90 pediatric residents and pediatric emergency medicine fellows based at Children's Hospital receive training in pediatric trauma medicine. At the most senior level of training, we accept one pediatric surgery fellow each year, who is involved daily in every aspect of our care for injured children.
In addition to our in-house residents and fellows, doctors in many other programs around the Bay Area receive a significant portion of their pediatric training with us.
These include:
- General surgery residents (UCSF East Bay Surgery Program)
- Emergency medicine residents (UCSF and Alameda Health System)
- Orthopedic surgery residents (UCSF)
- Orthopedic surgery residents (UCSF Stanyan Medical Center)
- Anesthesia residents (UCSF)
- Pediatric critical care medicine fellows (UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals San Francisco and Oakland)
Residents trained at the trauma center in Oakland have gone on to complete fellowships in trauma surgery or pediatric emergency medicine in hospitals around the country. We are proud to be an integral part of training the next generation of physicians to care for the most critical trauma patients.
