Comprehensive hearing care for children
Hearing plays a vital role in a child's development and ability to communicate, so no child is too young to be tested or treated for hearing problems. If you're concerned about your child's hearing, we can help you find answers.
At UCSF Benioff Children's Hospitals, our pediatric audiologists provide diagnostic hearing evaluations for children of all ages, from infants to adolescents. Based on the results, our team of audiologists, speech-language pathologists and developmental specialists create a personalized treatment plan tailored to your child's needs.
Advanced hearing evaluations
Our audiology program offers state-of-the-art hearing tests to help us develop the best care plan for your child. We're one of only a few programs in the Bay Area to offer sedated and non-sedated auditory brainstem response (ABR) evaluations. ABR tests help us determine how well the hearing nerve picks up sound and sends signals to the brain.
We also offer assessments for central auditory processing disorder, which affects the brain's ability to recognize and interpret sounds, especially speech.
If testing shows that your child has a complex hearing impairment, they may need care from multiple specialists. Our pediatric hearing and communication program will coordinate all the care and services they need.
Hearing devices and rehabilitation
We provide a wide range of hearing aids and treatments to help kids achieve their fullest potential for hearing and communication.
Our audiologists offer amplification devices, including:
Digital hearing aids
Bone conduction hearing aids for problems in the middle and outer ear
Contralateral routing of signals devices for single-sided deafness
We also provide referrals to our pediatric otolaryngologists for children with severe-to-profound hearing loss who may benefit from cochlear implants. In addition, aural (hearing) rehabilitation is available from our expert speech-language pathologists.

Preschool Hearing ScreeningOpens in a new window
Children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing (D/HH) are at risk of speech and language delays, which can be mitigated through early identification and intervention. Identifying hearing loss (HL) during preschool is crucial, but the most effective hearing screening method for preschoolers remains uncertain...Gene Therapy Trial for Otoferlin Gene-mediated Hearing LossOpens in a new window
