Quality of Patient Care, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco

UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital San Francisco is committed to providing the highest quality of patient care. We measure our performance and compare our results with top medical centers nationwide to ensure continual improvement and deliver the best possible outcomes for patients.
Following guidance put forth by the Institute of Medicine (an independent, nonprofit advisory organization) we focus on six domains that determine and define the quality of patient care. According to that system, a quality health care system aims to be:
- Safe. It avoids harm to patients from the care that is intended to help them.
- Effective. It provides services based on scientific knowledge to all who could benefit.
- Patient-centered. It provides care that is respectful of and responsive to individual patient and family preferences, needs and values, ensuring that these values guide all clinical decisions.
- Timely. It limits waits and delays for both those who receive and those who give care.
- Efficient. It avoids waste, including waste of equipment, supplies, ideas and energy.
- Equitable. It provides care that doesn't vary in quality because of personal characteristics, such as gender, ethnicity, geographic location and socioeconomic status.
You have many choices for where you and your family receive health care. We believe medical centers should provide data on their performance so patients and their families can make informed decisions about where they seek care.
